ASUS Outs First Windows 8-Ready Sockets AM3+, FM1 Motherboards

Often, Windows [insert new version] certification labels dont mean squat to PC enthusiasts. With Windows Vista labels, it meant that the integrated graphics could handle DirectX 9-accelerated Aero UI; Windows 7, not so much over that. Windows 8 readiness adds quite a few little hardware requirements, to support new OS features such as Fast Boot (start PC in under 2 seconds, different from S3 resume). While a few motherboard vendors announced Windows 8 readiness for their motherboards, ASUS claims to be the first with motherboards in the AMD platform that will feature the Windows 8 readiness logo. Hardware redesigns meant that ASUS launches revisions of existing products. These revisions are designated by "R 2.0" suffixed to the model names.

ASUS released revisions of most of its M5A99 (AMD 990FX, 990X), M5A97 (AMD 970), F1A75/A55 (AMD A75, A55) series motherboards, TUF Sabertooth 990FX, and its flagship AMD platform motherboard, the ROG Crosshair V Formula. The revision of the latter is named Crosshair V Formula-Z.Features common to all these revisions include support for Fast Boot, ASUS Boot Settings, which lets you fine-tune system startup processes, and DirectKey, a button that loads up the BIOS setup program, similar to the Back2BIOS button found on Intel Desktop Boards Extreme series.

Apart from Windows 8-specific feature updates, ASUS took the opportunity to update the feature sets of several of its motherboards in the above mentioned revisions. Features such as Smart Digi+ Key, which are found on P8Z77-V series, are ported over. The ASUS-exclusive feature-set also includes 802.11 b/g/n netowork interfaces with Remote Wi-Fi Go!, a feature based on Wi-Fi Go!, that provides media streaming and remote desktop capabilities to smartphones and tablets.

ASUS ROG Crosshair V Formula-Z gets all the new features of its R 2.0 mates, plusExtreme Engine Digi+ II (a VRM design found on Maximus V series). The audio is also updated, SupremeFX III audio with "Red Line shielding." The portion of the motherboard that holds the HD audio CODEC and its anciliary AMP components is isolated from the ground-layer of the rest of the motherboard, minimizing EMI from other power-hungry components, which typically produce a faint buzzing noise in the output channels of onboard audio. Apart from ground-layer isolation, a bulk of the audio portion, including the CODEC, is covered by a metallic EMI shield. The Crosshair V Formula-Z also features GameFirst II, a network prioritization tool with an intuitive new user interface (EZ Mode).

Lastly, theres the F1A75/A55 R 2.0 series motherboards for first-generation A-series "Llano" APUs. The revised motherboards feature LucidLogix Virtu MVP (load-balancing GPU virtualization between onboard and discrete graphics adapters), DIP 2 with Digi+ VRM, Network iControl (prioritization, diagnostics), and AI Suite II.

Apart from the features mentioned above, the models are largely similar to the motherboards they are revisions of.

Apple wants to ban more Samsung devices in the U.S

Last month, a California court awarded Apple USD $1.05 billion after it found Samsung willfully infringed Apple’s patents. The story definitely hasn’t ended there as the Cupertino-based iPhone maker has submitted a new list of devices that it thinks should be banned for patent infringements.

The Galaxy Note and Galaxy S3 are two of the flagships on a new list of 21 gadgets that has been submitted to a court in California. Samsung’s Galaxy S3 has been selling quite well, with more than 10 million already sold worldwide since the launch in May. The Galaxy Note is also another hot device, but much of the attention has been diverted to the highly anticipated Galaxy Note 2—unveiled at the IFA, Berlin.

Apple already has an edge over Samsung in light of its recent court victory, and the addition of two of Samsung’s hottest selling devices to the possible ban list in the U.S. only makes it harder for the South Korean tech firm to compete with Apple.

In a recent legal document, Apple continues accuse Samsung of copying Apple’s user interface, technology, and innovative style.

Samsung’s response to the accusations is also nothing new, whereby, the firm points out consumer interests are being neglected because Apple is overly aggressive with its patents.

“Apple continues to resort to litigation over market competition in an effort to limit consumer choice,” Samsung said in a statement. “We will continue to take the necessary legal measures to ensure the availability of our innovative products in the United States.”

Apple to unveil iOS and OS X updates at WWDC in June

Apple will hold its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in early June, where it will unveil details about the future of iOS and OS X.

The conference will be held in Moscone West, San Francisco from 11 June to 15 June, and will see Apple revealing its plans for its operating systems so that developers can build new apps.“We have a great WWDC planned this year and can’t wait to share the latest news about iOS and OS X Mountain Lion with developers,” said Philip Schiller, SVP of Worldwide Marketing at Apple.“The iOS platform has created an entirely new industry with fantastic opportunities for developers around the world.”The conference will involve more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers, 100 hands-on labs staffed by over 1,000 Apple engineers, an extensive meet and greet with fellow developers, and the Apple Design Awards for the best apps on the iPhone, iPad and Mac.As ever, Apple is being tight-lipped about its plans, but previous trends suggest we wont see a new hardware product, like the much-anticipated new iPhone, but rather a focus on a new version of iOS, which will need to compete with an equally new version of Android set to be revealed at Googles I/O event, which will also be held in June.It is not yet clear what new features iOS 6 will have, but some reports suggest it will include its recent acquisition of Chomp, software which makes it easier to find apps, to ensure iOS devices remain the most popular choice for app developers.

AMD Sampling RV505CE GPUs

ATI has started to sample the real RV505CE chips after two months delay. 80nm RV505CE is a shrunken version of ATI's 90nm RV515 core. It is manufactured by TSMC and has the same features as RV515, RV516 chips. It supports Shader Model 3.0, 64 or 128-bit memory interface, Avivo and Hyper memory that can address up to 512MB system memory. The plan is to brand the RV505CE as Radeon X1300 CE and clock the core at 350MHz. that way ATI can keep it passively cooled and make the low-profile cards. AT amp;T to offer Windows 8 Samsung ATIV Smart PC for $799

The ATIV Smart PC is an Intel Atom (Z2760) powered tablet that is aimed at the business sectors. AT&T is planning to charge $799 for the device, which may come under scrutiny since that’s a hefty premium for a tablet that has relatively ‘average’ specs compared to other Z2760 business tablets. Of course, one has to take into account that the AT&T ATIV Smart PC comes with an integrated mobile broadband radio, and therefore the apparent premium price tag.

Samsung claims that the 9.9mm thin tablet can stay lit for 14.5 hours on a single charge. The 1.5GHz 11.6-inch (1366x768) tablet also comes with 64GB of SSD storage (expandable to 94GB via microSD), and 2GB of RAM.

Keep in mind that AT&T will be offering just the tablet by itself, with no accessories/add-ons such as a keyboard dock (which most Windows 8 users will probably want). Factor in the additional costs of accessories and add-ons and it’s easy to see that this Windows 8 tablet offering from AT&T may not sell that many units.

(Samsungs ATIV Smart PC Pro)

If the $800 tag for a device that doesn’t boast much muscle is a turn off, then perhaps the ATIV Smart PC Pro may be a better alternative if Samsung is still your flavor. The Pro version has a beefier Core i5 3317U clocked at 1.7GHz, 128 GB of SSD storage, 4GB of RAM, and even the screen has a higher resolution—coming in at 1920x1080. All the features on the Pro definitely help it to outshine the standard model, but you won’t get the mobile broadband radio in the Pro, yet. The current going price for the Pro version is $1,199 (Amazon), and although the tag is higher than the AT&T offering, the Pro comes packaged with a keyboard dock.

AT amp;T unveils Windows Mobile 6.5 powered Tilt 2 and Pure

AT&T today announced two new smartphones based on Microsoft Inc.'s new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, HTC's Tilt 2 and Pure. AT&T said the HTC Pure is now available at AT&T stores for $150 after rebates, and the HTC Tilt 2 will cost $300 after rebates. Both require a smartphone data plan commitment and a $40 or higher voice plan in order to receive the rebates.

The HTC Pure is a touchscreen device, while the Tilt 2 combines a tilting touchscreen with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Both offer a user interface that gives access to voice, text or e-mail by viewing a single contact.

AT&Tsaid it will support the Windows Marketplace for Mobile for users to access applications from the Pure and Tilt 2, and users can even add their purchases from Windows Marketplace to their monthly AT&T billing statements.

The Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade, announced on Feb. 16, is designed to enhance ease-of-use, with touch-friendly interfaces and a Internet Explorer Mobile browser that supports Adobe Inc.'s Flash multimedia technology.

AT&T said the Tilt 2 is targeted at business professionals with its high resolution 3.6-inch diagonal display and a larger QWERTY keyboard for heavy e-mail use. It also includes a 3.2 megapixel camera.

The Pure is designed for one-hand use, with a 3.2-inch diagonal touchscreen. It comes with a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with video capture. Details on exact size and weight of the devices were not available.

3 Year Old G71M Notebook GPU Gets A New Refresh

It seems the bad bump/underfill issue doesn't just plagued some of the Nvidia G84/G86 notebook GPUs.Their 3 year old "high end" G71M GPUs might suffer the sameproblem as well. For your information, notebooks with GeForce Go 7950 GTX, Go 7900 GTX and Go 7900 GS are based on G71M.

Nvidia recently informed their partners that they will be producing G71M-T notebook GPU based on the new Eutectic Bump/Hitachi Underfill and encourage customers to transist to this latest revision as soon as possible. This improves product quality and enhances operating life by improved thermal cycling reliability.

Most probably, Nvidia is taking some precautionary measures here and we aren't aware if consumers are facing any issue currently. However, if you are having notebooks based on G71M GPU and facing graphics related issue, we would certainly love to hear from you.
